Mr. Jarmo Penttila

The National Theater of Chaillot, Program Advisor Paris, France


Jarmo Penttila has been the program advisor for The National Theater of Chaillot in Paris, since September 2011.
It is the only National Theatre (there are 5 in France), which is dedicated for Dance.

Prior to this, he was  the artist advisor at the National Chorégraphiques Center; CCN Ballet de Lorraine, in Nancy and responsible for touring and rehearsals for new creations by international invited choreographers. He was also responsible for archives and dance films and videos for the center; making and filming dance and editing for archives. He was also a dancer and a teacher in contemporary dance in France at the National Choreographique Center CCN Grenoble for Jean Claude Gallotta, for Odile Duboc, etc; and a teacher at The National Center of Dance CND in Paris for professionals and at the Conservatoire National Superior for Dance in Lyon CNSMD for dance students. Jarmo graduated from University of Dance of State of Sweden, Stockholm in 1982 and was awarded by the State of France the “ Chevalier de L’Ordre des Arts et Lettres” in 2006.

Curatorial Statement

The National Theater of Chaillot in Paris aims to present an “Australian Focus” in June 2015 during one week ; one big company , one medium size trio performance and one duo in small space. The company has 3 venues, “salle Vilar “for 12000 seats, “salle Gémier “400 seats (now closed for renovation, Re-opening September 2016) and “salle Maurice Béjart “80 seats. We present only contemporary dance performances. Big companies in big hall and medium size in Gémier, and small solos, duos in Béjart venue.

The National Theater of Chaillot presents approximately 360 performances a year with about 35-40 productions. We have 70% dance and 30% theatre presentation in a year.  50% French companies and 50% foreigner countries.

The company produces all of José Montavo (house choreographer) and have recently appointed a residency choreographer Carolyn Carlson for 3 years and produce her new creation ‘Now’ in November 2014.
